GENERAL PURPOSE
- Leads and manages all functions relating to the engineering of special product, including product quality, reliability, cost, and continuous improvement.
- Achieves results through strong leadership and effective planning, organizing, implementation, and execution.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Applies sound project management and engineering principles. May develop and manage project schedules, expenses and other resources assigned to bring large projects in on time and within budget.
- Cultivates a culture that is customer focused, collaborative, creative, and embraces change.
- Ensure the team's performance and accountability to quality and output metrics.
- Identifies and solves department problems that cause poor quality or reduce efficiency.
- Collaborates with internal partners and corporate quality teams to ensure the identification of quality issues and their root causes, and designs and implements solutions.
- Ensures clear written and verbal communications and documentation of commitments by the Specials Engineering team.
- Ensures that the Specials Engineering team is meeting customer needs, internal and external, by delivering the best solutions possible in a timely manner with the highest levels of professionalism.
- Ensures that the Specials Engineering team maintains extensive knowledge of all products and their ability to modify them.
- Establishes exceptional working relationships with internal and external business partners to include product engineering, product application specialists and purchasing, product management, process engineering, manufacturing operations, product development, maintenance engineering and field contacts.
- Coaches and mentors members of the Specials Engineering work team. May have direct management responsibilities over the Specials Engineering team members.
- Manages the integrity of the Specials Engineering databases through regular maintenance as prompted by changes or discontinuations.
- Manages time well, sets appropriate priorities, and meets deadlines.
- Motivates and inspires Specials Engineering team members to improve processes through creativity, problem solving and learning, accomplished through setting expectations, coaching, and encouragement.
- Participates in and/or manages cross-functional teams or projects related to nonstandard products.
- Tracks, reports, and achieves all target performance metrics for Specials Engineering.
- Also uses tools to analyze trends, financial metrics, sales & order data, and compiles into reports with recommendations as needed.
- Works with internal contacts to ensure department stays on the leading edge of technology.
- Performs additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, design, facilities, or business OR equivalent professional experience.
- 5 years of experience in the Contract Office Furniture business working in product specification or engineering is preferred.
S kills and Abilities
- Contract case goods product knowledge is preferred.
- Proven and recognized leadership ability.
- Proven ability to manage the workload, goal setting, and performance planning of a professional team.
- Outstanding communication skills, proven problem solving, facilitation, and conflict management skills.
- Proven competency in computer skills, financial analysis, training, project management, and specification translation.
- Must be a strategic thinker with a strong sense of integrity and collaboration.
- Customer focused--each action / strategy considers the impact on the customer.
- Must be an extremely strong team player / leader.
- Comfortable and poised, decisive, and able to effectively interpret policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively use office automation, communication software and tools currently used in the Herman Miller office environment.
