If you are passionate about structural design and have an interest in seeing your parts on high impact products, you will have an exciting opportunity to play a role in transitioning our world class electric humanoid robot from R&D to production. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Atlas Structures and Mechanisms team, you will leverage your creativity and knowledge of various product minded fabrication processes to maximize structural performance per dollar across the entire robot.
Navigating ambiguity, creative thinking, attention to detail, technical excellence, efficient communication, and a team first collaborative mindset are key superpowers that will lead to success. Every day you will strategize with a multidisciplinary team on the most efficient structural approach to achieving world class packaging efficiency while looking for clever ways to keep part cost low with production in mind. Your knowledge of product oriented fabrication processes such as casting, forging, stamping, sheet metal, hydroforming, injection molding, etc. will be essential in selecting the optimal process for each component that you design.
How you will make an impact:
Maximizing structural performance per dollar to bring Atlas from prototype to product
Develop new structural concepts and perform analysis on designs while considering constraints from multiple disciplines with a product-oriented focus. Leverage strong critical thinking to use material and processes efficiently for required load cases
Trade study and select the optimal production process that balances performance and cost
Create CAD models, drawings, specifications, assembly documentation, and test plans for parts and assemblies
Troubleshoot issues, determine root causes, design and implement corrective and preventative solutions
Manage and work with outside vendors for components and assemblies that require outsourcing
Expertly manage more than one project concurrently while still meeting deadlines
High level of technical communication proficiency
Adapt quickly to changing project needs with a team first mindset
Desired Experience:
Any of the experience listed below would be applicable in this role, it is not expected that candidates would possess all of these qualifications
BSME and minimum 2 years of relevant experience (including MSME/PhD degrees with professional engineering experience)
Experience designing complex mechanical structures and assemblies
Proficient CATIA user or equivalent (NX, Solidworks, etc.), including finite element analysis, 2D drawings, simulations
Familiarity with PLM systems, (Arena preferred), and engineering change processes
A working knowledge of ASME drafting standards including GD&T, (Y14.5-2018)
Transitioning early designs to products [NPI, EVT, DVT]
Ability to manage more than one project concurrently while still meeting deadlines
Soft skills: strong critical thinking, creativity, team first mindset, excellent attention to detail, strong technical communication
