Design Drafter Jobs in Richmond, VA
A Design Drafter in the manufacturing engineering industry creates technical drawings and plans for manufacturing products and structures. These drawings are used by production and construction workers to build everything from microchips to skyscrapers. Design Drafters work with engineers and other professionals on technical drawings and use computer-aided design (CAD) systems to prepare diagrams and drafts. They work on multiple projects and must be detail-oriented to make sure that all specs and dimensions are accurate. A Design Drafter also reviews and revises design drawings and production layouts as per project requirements.
Important skills for a Design Drafter include strong technical drawing skills, proficiency in CAD software, and a good understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods. They should have excellent attention to detail, good problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well in a team. Certification in drafting from a technical school or community college can be advantageous, while courses in mathematics, science, computer technology, design, and drafting are useful. Prior roles that can lead to a Design Drafter position include CAD Operator, Mechanical Drafter, and Junior Engineer.
